Countries like Malaysia, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia and Egypt in particular have implemented women-only train carriages and in many ways, these regulations have been successful as women feel more relaxed and safer being in public spaces. On the other hand, the practice seems outdated; reminiscent of ancient cultures that have gender-segregated living quarters where women have their freedom of movement limited. The installation draws parallels with ancient Peranakan Chinese screen doors with the doors on trains and metro systems, both imposing gendered segregated spaces.
